Scything Competition
Results 2024
West of England Scythe Championship (5x 5 plots)
The top 3 were very evenly matched this year, but former champion Kevin Austin from Cornwall reclaimed his crown, with local Plot Gate resident Dan Brittan finishing a close 2nd place (his highest placing yet) and up and coming Tom waters, also of Cornwall, a close 3rd.
It was definitely a good year for the old guard as Andi Rickard claimed the Women’s cup (as usual!), Richard Brown took the Vets cup, and Terry Standen reclaimed his English Scythe cup. But there was a real surprise in the Quality cup awards as newcomer Richard Stump was the standout performer.
Awards were also given for:
Fast But Crap – Michael Gerrard with the fastest time of all competitors at 1:01 but was penalised heavily by the judges for his quality of 6.5.
Best Newcomer – Went to Richard Stump who had attended the Improvers course at the fair on Fri and Sat, and walked away with the quality cup on Sunday with a very respectable time.
The Team Race
40m x 1.8m strip was won by Kevin's team, in 52 seconds. Then were Danny's team (1min 7secs), Andi's team (1min 8secs) and Nigel's team (1min 9secs). There were seven scythers in each team.
